Why my husband loves my stockpile!

I received several emails in the last few days on different topics but there was a common thread, “My husband wonders if this is really worth it.” {it being stockpiling}.  I understand that some husbands (or wives or partners) can be leery and curious when we come home with 10 bottles of pasta sauce and five bottles of body lotion…”Just what are we going to be eating??”  So I talked to my husband last night about what he thinks about my stockpile.   (Love might be a bit strong- how about appreciate my stockpile??) Here is what he said:

1. If he has a craving for something most likely we have it in the pantry, fridge or freezer. (Like last night at around 11:30 when he had a craving for a bowl of cereal he had his choice of about 10 different kinds!)

2. If he wants something special for dinner, most likely we have it in the pantry, fridge or freezer.  This morning my husband says, “I’d love some BBQ chicken tonight”  I say “Ok and before he even left for work there was chicken in the crockpot (from the freezer- which I was planning on cooking chicken anyway so it was defrosting ), BBQ sauce out of the pantry, Mac & cheese ingredients laid out and corn bread mix ready to be mixed & baked.  Frozen corn will wait in the fridge until dinner time.  No shopping needed to please his BBQ craving!

3. He never has to worry about running out of his favorite toothpaste, deodorant or shampoo.  If the bottle, tube or stick in the bathroom is empty just take 3 steps to the beauty cabinet where a pile awaits him.  He said before we got married and his toothbrush dropped in the potty- he was out of luck….now he just gets a new one from the closet!

4. He never has to worry about being hungry if I mess up dinner (and it happens! ) I tried a new recipe that just flopped ~ but we didn’t have to spend $50 at a casual restaurant or even $25 at a fast food place because there are frozen pizzas or dinners or something we can whip up in minutes.

5. He got to show off his handy skills ~ by building me floor to ceiling shelves in our pantry (YES it started with a lot of eye rolling and whining but by the end (after many “Oh Honey it looks great!  Thanks so so so much!)- now he shows them all off!

6. The less I spend on shampoo and pantry staples the less I whine when he wants to spend $12 on beer.  (note: beer $ does not come out of my grocery budget it comes out of my husband’s “entertainment” fund )

7. A phone call asking him to bring something home on his way back from work is very very very rare.  He said on the rare occasions I ask him for something (maybe once a year or so) he knows it is because he probably ate it the night before when I set it on the counter.

8. When I have an evening away from the house he can have “appetizer” nights with the kids.  The other night I went out with a friend and so he and the kids made dinner out of a bunch of different “appetizers” like nachos, chicken wings, chips & salsa (note: this was not a “Mom” approved dinner but I will say the kids loved it & had a great time with Daddy).

9. He said at first when I started bring home 10 boxes of something a week he was concerned I had lost my mind and was wasting money but he now “understands that this works” because of the change in our finances over the last 13 years since we got married.  It also feels good to take bags and bags to the local food bank and not even miss the money or the food! He still thinks I go overboard on a few items but he doesn’t get the details of money makers and rolling catalina deals so I let his gripes about my 40 jars of pasta sauce and overstock of mouthwash slide.

Does your husband, wife, partner have concerns about whether stockpiling works?

I loved reading this post!! I’ve been couponing for about 9 months. I’m proud of my stock up. My husband on the other hand has told me many times…”do not buy any more”…of blah blah. So when I do buy more of blah blah I hide it in the one place he never goes….the laundry room. I’m excited to show him your post. I also would like to thank you sooooo much for your hard work and detication. I went from spending 200-250 for a family of 5. To maybe 50 dollars…more on super doubles or triples :) thanks for all you do!!

I love this post! I think that my husband appreciates my stock pile too. He enjoys being able to go to the pantry as well and pulling out whatever he is craving. Since I have started stock piling I have been able to buy snacks and other things I otherwise would not buy because it is just too plain expensive. He never has to worry about personal care items again :) I love your blog by the way! Thanks for all you do!!

My husband has said a lot of the same things. Right now his main complaint is that our stash isn’t organized enough. Of course, my response is to swap a larger set of shelves for the one we use. Hasn’t happened yet!

that is awesome. My husband also shows appreciation for the way I coupon. I am not an expert by no means and still miss some deals but I am thankful that my pantry is full and I am not spending hundreds of $$ a week on groceries. It’s helped me to start our retirement savings which has been way over due. Ohh and let me add we are also taking our very 1st family week long vacation in the 7 years we’ve been married. Disney Cruise next weekend!! woo hoo!!! =)

Thank you for all you do to help us reach our financial goals.

My husband is on board, even though I think the stockpile frustrates him sometimes because we’re still trying to fit into an old Victorian home that’s much smaller than our old house. Instead of complaining about the stockpile, we’ve been talking about how to use his annual bonus to solve our overall storage problems, and the stockpile is considered as important to our lifestyle as our clothes or the Christmas decorations.

Of course, it’s hard to argue with what I’m doing when I got HT to pay me (after coupons and Catalinas) to haul pasta sauce out of the store…

Sometimes I take a picture of the cart and send it to him with a total. If it’s a REALLY good day, I might even call him with the total and read the receipt to him. I think it makes a huge difference that I stop short of hoarding, and while I might buy things with coupons that are cheap or free so I can donate them, I don’t keep things that we won’t use.
