I admit- stocking up on frozen foods is one of my favorite ways to save. I even freeze my own sliced veggies and other foods. I make 2 pans of lasagne and put one in the freezer. So my freezer is well loved.
BUT it was terribly disorganized. Everything was just thrown in and if I needed (or wanted) a pot roast I had to dig down past frozen chickens, french fries, gallons of milk and more just to find it.
In fact, it was so full I was afraid daily that it would pop open and thaw everything out. I had the same problem with my fridge- it was so full of butter, eggs, orange juice, iced tea that it was impossible to navigate and get what we needed to use on a daily basis.
So, I purchased a second fridge/freezer to put in my basement so my “real” fridge wouldn’t be full of beverages, hot dogs, cheese, eggs, butter and more. Now my daughter says my upstairs fridge looks “normal” instead of how it used to look:
I considered a lot of options for my deep freezer (I wish I had take a before pic!):
-Baskets/cartons: I chose NOT to go this method since it seemed to take up a lot of room
-Just organizing it: I still had the problem of having to dig. If cheese was top and I needed meat on the bottom I still had to dig.’
I decided to use tote bags! I LOVE reusable bags and grab one whenever I can so I took a few of my older ones and used them as my organizing system in my chest freezer.
-I placed my frozen gallons of milk on the bottom
-I placed my frozen vegetables, breads, hot dogs and frozen meals into my standing fridge/freezer combo.
I am using 4 bags:
Pork & Turkey (the lesser used meats in my house)
Cheese (yes – it deserves it’s own bag at my house!)
I made simple paper tags and covered them in clear laminating sheets (you could probably use packaging tape too) for each bag.
I simply place the prepared items in the corresponding bag. When I need chicken breast- I can take just that bag out and find the package I need.
I have a basket in there too for items that I am stocking up for our family lake trip this summer- so I know that these aren’t to be used for my immediate family!
So far this is working well for me. If I send my husband down to the freezer to grab a package of chicken breast- he can easily find it by grabbing the bag labeled “chicken” no more directions like “Look under the breakfast sausage next to the cheese.
I also have 2 fridge/freezer combos- here is my basement freezer…..still working on a way to organize that one! I hate having to take out a pile of food just to reach the stuff in the back!
How do you organize your freezer?
