If you don’t know…. I LOVE thrifting. My girls and I went thrifting today and at one Goodwill I found these mugs that I LOVED. They look like they are hand glazed (who knows maybe just a good fake) but I loved the teal and grey colors. I even found two (the colors were slightly different) but I loved them and for 50 cents….I didn’t want to pass them up…until I turned them around….
Really? These gorgeous glazed mugs with Outer Banks, NC on the side and not even nicely applied! I really really loved the glaze but the text just wasn’t doing it for me…
I started to sadly put them back…..but then I decided to take my nail and see if I could scratch it off. It the paint was UNDER the glaze no way but if it was painted on TOP of the glaze it might just might come off…and sure enough….I was able to lightly scratch off a tiny bit.
So I snagged those beautiful mugs and took them home. I gave them a good scrub with hot water and my favorite dish soap (Dawn Powerwash) and was able to scrub a tiny bit more off but then I grabbed my old faithful: Magic Erasers. A few seconds later and ALL the ugly text was gone leaving the gorgeous layers of color on these mugs and me dreaming of cool night so I can have a mug of hot cocoa in one of these.
This ONLY works if the text is painted OVER the glaze. That is more common with beautifully glazed mugs that the vacation spot is just added later. Commercially made mugs like these below it won’t work.
Instead look for mugs that appear to be hand glazed. They won’t be perfect and will have variation. These are more likely to be finished by the artist and then the location adds the city with paint or ink.

We spent a week in Mexico City this summer and the food…y’all the food is amazing. Hand made tortillas and the best roasted chicken I’ve ever had! Street food is the most amazing in Mexico City….even better than my Mother-in-law’s but don’t tell her I said that! After getting home I had a craving for some of those flavors and so we made Carnitas!
Traditional Carnitas are slow simmered all day but this lady didn’t have the energy nor the patience to wait that day so i did it in the Insta Pot!
(p.s. Check out this Traditional Carnitas recipe by Mexico In My Kitchen because I am in no way an authentic carnita maker! This is the lazy way to get some carnita flavor if you (like me ) don’t have the time to do it the right way.
Thankfully I was able to get my mother in law’s recipe and switched it up for the pressure cooker.
