This is my Americanized version of Flautas. I love them because they are plain and we can each customize the final product to our tastes! The kids like them plain and my hubby tops them with spicy salsa!
Ingredients for flautas:
Oil for frying (I used canola)
3 chicken breasts, cooked and shredded ( I cooked mine in the crock pot with garlic salt, cumin, jalapeno peppers. You could also use a rotisserie chicken or leftovers!)
15 flour tortillas (5-6 inch)
Toothpicks or cut down skewers
Salsa of choice
Cheese (We used Queso Fresco)
Place about 2 inches of oil in pan and heat over medium heat.
Spread shredded chicken along middle of tortilla. Roll tortilla tightly around chicken and secure with toothpick.
Use tongs to place tortilla roll in hot oil until it is crispy and golden brown. (Be careful the tortilla will want to unroll- use the tongs to hold it together until firm)
Place standing up in a cup with paper towels in the bottom to allow excess oil to drain out.
After drained completely, place in a warmed oven (about 200 degrees) to keep warm while rest of flautas are cooked.
Top flautas as desired.
