This is an old family recipe. I can still remember walking into my Nana’s house and smelling the sponge candy! It is delicious and melts in your mouth. Hard to believe it has baking soda and vinegar in it!
Ingredients:
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup dark corn syrup
- 1 TB vinegar
- 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
- Dab of butter to butter pan
- 9x9x2 pan
- Combine sugar, corn syrup and vinegar in a heavy saucepan.
- Cook over medium heat until sugar dissolves.
- Continue cooking without stirring until a piece of the mixture dropped into a glass of cold water becomes brittle. Remove pan from the heat.
- Quickly stir in baking soda. Pour the mixture into a buttered 9x9x2 pan. Cool.
- Take a knife and hit gently with a hammer to break candy into pieces. If desired you can dip the pieces into chocolate .
Now enjoy the way the candy just melts in your mouth.
