USATODAY is reporting that milk and dairy prices are expected to rise due to the current drought conditions our country is facing. Now, prices fluctuate and I’m not saying to run out and spend hundreds of dollars buying a freezer full of diary products but having an extra gallon or two in the freezer may save you some money down the line.
According to the article (HERE) current prices are very low due to an actual surplus. From what I understand we are not talking about it rising $2 or $3 but why spend more than we have to?
Lowe’s Foods has milk for $2.88 a gallon this week. Milk freezes very well! I write the # of days until the expiration date with a permanent marker on the front and put it in the jug or carton straight in the freezer. It takes a day or so to thaw and then I only keep it for the # of days written on the front. Some people recommend dumping a little bit of milk out to keep the jug from splitting but I personally have never had any issue with that. I place a towel under the gallon in the fridge as it thaws to keep the fridge shelves dry.
Cheese prices are also expected to rise so if you find a good deal on cheese- it also freezes well! Block cheese does not freeze as well as shredded so it’s recommended to shred the cheese prior to freezing!
