Guys I’ve had this idea in my head for months….and then this green bakers rack showed up on Facebook Marketplace…. so I snapped it up!
This is NOT my style….but funny story 20 years ago when I was first married, our kitchen decor was grapes and grape leaves! Full circle right?!?
So I used a Dremel with cutting wheels to cut the welds of all the leaves and grapes.
There was a LOT of welds to cut through so I went through 5 Heavy Duty Cut-off Wheels.
Then I used a heavy metal file (like this one) to flatten and smooth all the cuts so there would be no injuries…and it would just look good!
There was a lot of rusted metal, so I used a metal brush to remove all the flakes and clean it up.
Then I washed the entire thing with a degreaser and let it air dry.
While it was drying I grabbed my wood and paint.
I used a rust primer and then Krylon Chalky Finish in Anvil Gray. It took 3 coats for me to be happy.
I used not-so-expensive wood shelving and cut it to fit (my shelves were 12×27).
My rack had rounded edges on the shelves so I had to cut the same edge so the wood would sit nicely on the shelves.
I place the wood on top of the shelf and traced the curve with a pencil and then just used a jig saw to cut it and a small detail edger to sand the edges smooth. Since it was wood intended for shelving- it was already really smooth.
Your wood may require more sanding.
I test fitted all the shelves and am LOVING the look so far!
I wiped the wood down and then I used my FAVORITE stain – Minwax Espresso 273. I LOVE this stain and use it on nearly everything!
Then I just assembled it all!
