DIY Earring Holder

Materials:

1. Frame from Goodwill or a thrift store

2. Aluminum screening

3. Spray paint

4. Flowers/decorations

 

Directions:

1. Remove the backing and glass from the frame.

2. Spray paint the frame in the color of your choice.

3. When dry, measure the opening of the frame.

 

4. Using those measurements, measure and cut a piece of aluminum screening.

5. Place the screening on the back of the frame, in the opening.  Place a bead of hot glue around the edge of the screening to adhere it to the frame.

6.  Add flowers or other decorations using hot glue to the front of the frame.

7.  Hang your earring holder and start organizing your earrings!

This holder can be used at weddings for table numbers or directional signs. It also works great on tables at restaurants for small signs. The holders can be painted and decorated to match the colors of the event or restaurant or left plain.

Materials:

• Black pipe 3/4″ by 1/2″ female reducer
• Spray paint for metal
• Ribbon
• Sticky back felt to match paint
• Wine corks

Instructions:

1. Spray paint the reducer
2. Attach felt to the 3/4″ opening of reducer
3. Tie a ribbon around the reducer near the 1/2″ opening
4. Cut a slit across the end of the cork (this is to hold the paper)
5. Insert cork into the 3/4″ opening

DIY Shamrock Garland

Materials:

1. Shamrock outline printouts in 1-2 sizes

2. 3 shades of green felt

3. Bakers twine

 

Directions:

1. Print out the shamrock outline of your choice to use as a stencil.

2. Trace several size shamrocks out of several shades of green felt.

3. Cut out the shamrocks.

4. Lay out the pattern of shamrocks that you would like for your garland.  I chose to use 3 small shamrocks in the middle.

5. Thread the baker’s twine on a needle.

6. String the shamrocks on the twine, using an entry and exit point on each shamrock.

7.  Space out the shamrocks once strung.

8.  Hang your garland and enjoy!  Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Here is a simple project to make a cute piece of art for almost any room in your house!

Materials:

1. Magazine pictures

2. Paper cutter

3. Modge podge or other paper glue

4. Image outline printed on cardstock

 

Instructions:

1. Select an image to print or draw on cardstock.

2. Cut pages of magazine into strips around 1/4″ inch wide.

3. Glue the strips of magazine pictures onto the image outline using modge podge, trimming each end at the edge of the iage.

 

4. Fill the image with magazine strips.  Frame the collage, hang and enjoy!

This is a fun project but it does take some time. Use any color floss you want and be creative!

Materials:

• plastic eggs
• glue
• floss

Instructions:

1. Glue plastic egg shut
2. Use a toothpick to put some glue on the egg
3. Keep floss intact (6 strands) and apply two pieces together. (It just goes on better) and keep adding glue and wrapping the strands around the egg

I started in the middle and worked to one end and then started form the middle and worked to the other end. It worked best for me but you may find it easier to start at the end.

Looking for a unique wreath to hang on your front door this Valentine’s Day?  Follow the steps below to make a cute Valentine’s wreath using fabric and ribbon scraps you may already have at home.

Materials:

1. Wire

2. Fabric and/or ribbon

3. Wire cutters

4. Pliers

 

 

 

Instructions:

1. Cut wire and form into a heart.  You might need to use the pliers to connect the ends of the shape tightly.

2. Cut strips of fabric and/or ribbon into pieces about 3-4″ long.

3. Tie the strips of fabric onto the wire frame, covering the entire shape.

4. Add a piece of wire on the top to use as a hanger.

5. Hang and enjoy!

DIY projects don’t always work out to be as easy as you think when you first start.  It took many hours and a lot of trial and error to get this project completed and it was NOT easy to do. The average person does not own the type of tools needed to complete this project. We decided since it came out so cute and we had spent so much time on it we would post it anyway.

We wish you luck if any of you are brave enough to start form scratch and try to make another mixer. We would love to hear from you if you are successful.

My life is hectic- to say the least.   With running MoolaSavingMom, being a Mom to 4, Running a household, being a wife, and just being Me- sometimes I look up and suddenly it’s 5 pm!  Then I wander around trying to decide what to have for dinner but I find nothing but frozen chicken and beef.  What to do?

Too often we were eating scrambled eggs or grilled cheese. Not that those aren’t perfectly suitable meals- but we were just having them too often.

So I decided I needed to get more organized.  I needed to have a loose plan for dinner each night.  First I thought about printing out a menu but then I thought- that’s a page a week I’d rather use that paper and ink for COUPONS.

Then I thought about buying a whiteboard- they had cheap small ones at the Dollar Tree but I didn’t like their look and nicer ones at other stores were $6+. I really didn’t want to spend money on such a simple item (yes I am that cheap)

So I went into my closets and found a Dollar store frame and put this inside!

Here is the template for the toaster:  Wooden Play Toaster Template

 

Materials:

• 1/2″ x 6″ x 24″select pine
• 3/8″ x 6″ x 24″ select pine
• Spray paint of your choice (get good quality with primer or you will have to prime it first) or stain
• Sand paper or sander
• 2″ screw with cover
• Large clamps
• Nail gun
• Wood burner

Instructions:

1. Cut out all the pieces per template
2. Round edges of base with sander, paint and put aside
3. Sand toast and burn edges with the wood burner and stain or paint brown
4. Assemble all pieces of the toaster, glue, clamp, nail and allow to dry overnight (do not attach base yet)
5. Round all edges of the toaster except the bottom where it will attach to the base
6. Sand down the levers per template instructions
7. Drill hole for the screw with levers in place inside the toaster
8. Remove the levers and paint and/or stain the toaster and paint the levers separately
9. Glue and nail the base to the toaster
10. Put levers in place with the screw
11. Add decals of your choice

We are sharing Rebecca’s DIY project on MoolaSavingMom.com because they can be used for home schoolers, young artists and anyone else who wants DIY ideas that can save them money on projects around the house.

Chinese New Year means fireworks, paper lanterns, “lucky money” and red envelopes. These are two fun activities I made to use while we are learning about Chinese New Year.

1) I had an old Origami kit which happened to have red envelopes in it.  I put numbers from 1-5 in gold on the envelopes. I laminated the envelopes. Then I put gold coins with the envelopes. The children have to figure out how many coins to put in each envelope. You could either purchase some red envelopes or make them yourself out of red paper or origami paper.

2) I think it is important for children to know that there are many different languages in the world. Of course, my students can not read but most of them at least recognize some of the letters of the alphabet.  Chinese characters are not an alphabet. rather, each character could be a whole concept, one word or part of a word. Therefore you can not take, for example, each letter of a child’s name and fine a corresponding character in Chinese. So, what I did with the matching card game was get as close as I could. The main purpose of this activity was for the children to see another language and English written together. Again, I put the clipart and the writing in a table in word. I printed two copies on cardstock, cut them apart and laminated them.
