I really really wanted chili for dinner the other night. Really wanted chili. I had forgotten to take a package of beef out of the freezer last night so I was stuck between making something else or cooking it from frozen in a pan (which I hate to do- all that flipping and scraping and it comes out clumpy).
So I thought- why not try it in the instantpot? Worst case- the dog gets a really great dinner and we have mac n cheese. It turned out AWESOME. The meat had nearly all of the fat drained out so it is better for a meal where it’s in a flavorful sauce rather than used on it’s own. Most of the natural flavor from the fat is gone- used for tacos, a spicy sauce, or chili is perfect though!
How to Cook Frozen Ground Beef in Pressure Cooker
I LOVE my InstantPot – it sautes, slow cooks and pressure cooks. It’s my new favorite kitchen appliance.
First- place the trivet that comes with the Pressure Cooker (I couldn’t find mine and was in a hurry so I used a metal fryer pan- it had the drainage holes necessary and kept the meat out of the water). Place 1-2 pounds of ground beef on top.
Add 1 -2 cups of water to the bottom of the crock. Don’t let the water touch the beef.
Cook on high pressure for 25 minutes. The ground beef will cook and the fat will drain into the water.
Granted, it doesn’t look too pretty when it’s done but it crumbled beautifully. I removed the beef, trivet and water from the Instant Pot and turned it on saute, broke it up with this awesome ground beef tool. It was a tad pink in the very center coming out of the instant pot and I wanted to be sure it was 100% cooked!
Then I added all the chili makings- turned it back on pressure for 18 minutes and viola- dinner!
