When my oldest daughter was in elementary school a wonderful teacher taught the students how to make Rock Candy. We fell in love with making and eating it! It has been a Christmas tradition in our house to make Rock Candy ever since. We make different colors and flavors and give it to all of our neighbors. It is a fun activity for families to make together.
Materials:
- Medium sauce pan
- Candy thermometer
- Cookie sheet
- Foil
- Butter to grease foil
- 1 cup water
- 3 3/4 cups sugar
- 1 1/4 cups Light Corn Syrup
- 1 tsp food coloring of your choice
- 1 tsp flavor oil (I found these sets of 10 for just $11 on Amazon!)
- 1/3 powdered sugar
Instructions:
- Mix all ingredients except the powdered sugar in the sauce pan and boil until the candy thermometer reaches 300 degrees
- Add the food coloring and flavoring oil (do not hold your face too close when doing this)
- Pour onto foil lined cookie sheet and let cool
- When cool you can cut it into pieces with scissors if it is still pliable. If it is hard then break it apart by hitting it with a small tenderizing mallet
- Dust with powdered sugar and enjoy!

No the corn syrup is what makes the syrup – it is 1 1/4 cup syrup
