If I had the time, I would get a job at Harris Teeter. Not for the pay or benefits but so I could be in the store all day and find lots more deals! Harris Teeter may be super expensive on regular prices- but their sales and promos are awesome.
Here are some of the benefits of shopping at Harris Teeter!
Be sure to join our Couponing at Harris Teeter Group-
Sign up as an E-VIC member: EVIC members get special discounts. Each week on the flyer there is one EVIC member special. Then there are weekend EVIC specials. You will get an email on Friday with the specials they loaded to your card. Each week I collect these specials and post a matchup of them for you to use to save more.
eVIC Coupons: Digital Coupons you load to your card. These cannot be used with paper coupons but will allow you to get an extra!
Check for Special Promos: Harris Teeter is notorious for running hidden promos. You might only be aware of them because of a tag on the shelf or it;s published on their Facebook page or website. I do my best to share all of these deals with you each week.
Double Coupons: Harris Teeter doubles coupons 99¢ or less everyday. Coupons that state DND (do Not Double) can be manually entered at face value only. They will double (3) of the same coupon, the 4th plus will be accepted at face value only. They will double 20 coupons per day per VIC card household. If you try to use 21 coupons only the first 20 will double. Coupons that do not double (i.e. $1+, B1G1, etc) do not count towards this. EVIC coupons do not count towards this 20 limit. (get coupons here)
Super Doubles; Harris Teeter runs Super Doubles coupons where all the other rules apply – except a coupon $2 and under doubles! See the schedule back to 2011 here.
Get Extra Savings with SavingStar, Upromise, Ibotta and Checkout51. These are great ways to get even more savings than you can in the store! None of these programs will effect your total at checkout but you will see the savings later with the deposits in your accounts.
Rainchecks: Rainchecks NEVER expire at Harris Teeter! I’ve used some 2 years old! You can use them at ANY Harris Teeter store. And you can still use any manufacturer coupons in conjunction with them (as long as the coupons are in-date at the time of redemption). Effective 3/29/17 Harris Teeter will no longer accept ANY paper coupons with their rainchecks. ALL original blue rainchecks expired 5/31 and all new orange rainchecks will expire 60 days after written.
Buy 2 Get 3 Free Sales: These are very common at Harris Teeter. You need to buy all 5 items together in order to get the discount but you can use a coupon on each item. The 3rd+ coupon WILL beep the cashier does NOT need manager override- they just need to key in “Clear, Override, Enter” and it will accept the coupon.
Plus Guarantee: If you buy select Harris Teeter products that aren’t up to their standards they will give you your money back PLUS replace the item with another brand! This includes the Harris Teeter, HT Traders, HT Naturals, yourpet, yourhome, yourbaby or your Tot. (Note from Harris Teeter: However, we reserve the right to limit this program for those customers unable to be satisfied with our products, product quality and/or our services.)
Double Guarantee: On Rancher, USDA Choice, Reserve Angus Beef, Farmers Market, Fishermans Market or Fresh Foods Market items – if you are unhappy with them they will give you double your money back! (Note from Harris Teeter: However, we reserve the right to limit this program for those customers unable to be satisfied with our products, product quality and/or our services.)
Scan Guarantee: If an item rings up higher than the shelf tag- you get that item FREE! Be sure to pay attention at the register!
Substitutions: If an item is out of stock , many times if you ask the store to substitute another item they will! For example, they were recently out of the 9 roll Angel Soft toilet paper and subbed in the 12 rolls! *Note: a store substitution of a different brand does not allow us to use a coupon on the original brand on the substituted one.
Sub Club; Earn 1 pt for each 1/2 or (2) pts for each Whole Sub from the Sub Shop. Earn 15 pts and get a free sub!
Fresh Catch Club: Earn $5 electronic coupon for each $50 spent in Fresh Catch Items (Fish, etc) You need to register HERE for this program.
Student Discount: Select Stores near college campuses offer 5% student discounts with Student ID. Ask your store if they participate & if they do register with your VIC card!
Club 60: Shoppers 60 and over receive 5% discounts on Thursdays.
Pharmacy Promos: Occasionally Harris Teeter will run promotions on transferred prescriptions. In the past they’ve included up to $200 in free groceries or a gas gift card.
Free Wifi: Most Harris Teeter stores offer free wi-fi while shopping!
Free Cookies: Check by the deli or bakery in your store for the Harry the Dragon cookie stand! One free cookie per person!
Harry the Dragon Ride: Only a penny!
Special Orders: Have you seen something at another chain and want to buy it at Harris Teeter? Ask at customer service to place a special order! If any other Harris Teeter store carries it- it is quick and easy for them to get it in for you. If no other HT store carries it they will try to get it in your store just for you! This even goes for specific flavors!
Competitor Coupons: Harris Teeter will accept direct mail, Catalina or in-flyer coupons from competitors for money off your total purchase (such as $5 off $25, etc). They will not accept coupons from competitors for specific items (such as $0.50 off a toothbrush, etc).
FREE Smash Cake for First Birthday: Get a form from the bakery and register your child BEFORE their first birthday. A FREE cake will be loaded to your card to pick up around your child’s first birthday!
Flash Sales; Harris Teeter will post special offers on Instagram and Facebook available for ONE day only! Keep an eye there and MoolaSavingMom.com for new offers!
Taste & Tell: Every few weeks Harris Teeter will offer a freebie on their Facebook page- loaded to your VIC card. They ask that you review the item once you pick it up. Check their facebook page often- these are usually limited to a few hundred to thousand shoppers!
Fuel Stations & Program: Harris Teeter is adding Fuel Stations to stores! You can read about their new program at select stores here.
Expresslane Shopping: For a fee- Harris Teeter will grocery shop for you! Some locations will even deliver.

Great article!

Hi Jessie! Just wanted to ask, could you publish a list of stores that honor the Student Discount? As far as I know, Reynolda Road and Robinhood Road both honor them, but Kernersville nor Country Club do. That would really be helpful for me and my fellow students. That discount can REALLY add up.
MoolaSavingMom says
I wish there was a list of them- but there isn’t one I’ve been able to get my hands on 🙁
Kelly says
The last I heard, Harris Teeter on Cloverdale offers the student discount as well.
susan s says
Maybe call their corporate number and ask them.
Vanessa says
Peace Haven does too. When they discontinued offering it at Country Club, they told me use a 3 mile radius rule
Nicole says
Jessie, love your site!!
How many times can you use an evic coupon ?
Thanks,
Nicole
MoolaSavingMom says
Just one time

My kids are always asking if they can have this or that. I usually end up telling them, “If you find a coupon for it, let me know.” Over the weekend we went to a new trampoline jump place and I used a coupon for that. They were so excited asking about where did I get that coupon?
Get the kids involved in the store to help you look for coupons and sales tags. They are at a different height and sometimes see things that we adults can miss because we are looking up!
Thanks for all the tips!

At the Harris Teeter stores in the Charleston, SC area, for every transaction over $40 (before coupons), you qualify to purchase a $25 Shell or BP gas card for $20! They should offer this at all of their stores. You can purchase the card right away or wait and buy a bunch all at once. The opportunity to purchase them eventually expires, but it’s a great way to save money on gas.
Dawn says
At the Harris Teeter in Indian Trail they offered the gas card deal as well except it was for every transaction over $50 you have the opportunity to purchase a $50 gas card for $40 at either Shell or BP. I think it said the opportunity was good until April.

I have diabetes and my daughter is allergic to most detergents,to all that don’t say free. They had a sale on fresh pumpkin pie for an awesome promo price. But sugarfree was expensive. Manager gave it to me for promo price. They had all promo a while bk with evic coupon, but were out of All free,so manager gave me evic discount on tide free. Also we r vegetarians,so when meal deal included jimmy dean breakfast, they let us use the jimmy dean spiach&egg sandwhiches without changing the price of the meal deal and even let us use our jimmy dean sandwhich coupons.
susan s says
I meant spinach and eggs.

What a great post!! I sent it to all my newly converted coupon shopping friends.

Great tips! The best tip is “shop at Harris Teeter!” Their customer service from stock people to managers is just terrific.
They also have fresh boneless, skinless chicken breasts for $1.99 a pound every day in the butcher’s case. That’s a cheaper price than a BOGO sale. I just have myself to cook for and have asked the butcher to cut in half big Boston butt roasts and slabs of ribs for me. They are always happy to do it.
Crystal says
I am sure this qualifies as a dumb question, but where is the fresh meat case? I always thought it was the meat not in the freezer but that price is not $1.99 on chicken for sure.
Cindy says
The meat case is not the long open case along the back wall with prepackaged meat. It is the glass case with usually the higher priced Angus Reserve beef, lamb, and fresh fish. The chicken breasts are on the top shelf. They are unpackaged and you just ask the butcher for how many you want or approximate weight you want. He’ll put them in a plastic bag and then wrap them in brown paper. Each one will weigh about half a pound. If you eat as many of these as I do, you’re going to save a lot of money!

Thanks Cindy! I <3 that our community always helps each other out so quickly!

And don’t forget about the Recyclebank (www.recyclebank.com) rewards that are available to use! It’s very easy to get Recyclebank’s $10 off $50 Harris Teeter coupon, and if you live in the vicinity of a Shopper’s Food (SF) grocery store (found in the suburban DC area), then it’s a good bet Harris Teeter will accept the easily-available Recyclebank $5 off $25 SF coupon as a “competitor” coupon. Some HTs will even accept BOTH of these Recyclebank coupons in a single transaction.
Jessie @MoolaSavingMom says
Sadly the $10/$50 Recyclebank coupon has been limited to select areas with a special recycling program. it’s so limited I didn’t want to get people’s hopes up by even mentioning it.
Rence Magno says
I got a total of $250 dollars ($25×10) for transferring 10 prescriptions to Harris Teeter Pharmacy. I love FREE GROCERIES!!!
Lori in NC says
This is an excellent post, Jessie. If you find you get produce that isn’t up to standard, customer service will double the refund price (happened to me once when a red pepper was all moldy inside). This is at any store: Be nice to the cashiers — ask them what people have been buying lately (as you check out). There may be hidden deals that they uncover long before you can. And know that not all Harris Teeter stores are alike. Don’t let someone say “Oh, I don’t like Harris Teeter.” Ask them to shop at your favorite location and then decide.
Amanda Z says
My HTs take competitor coupons (like Food Lion $4 off $40)
Robin Brown says
If item does not have price on it is it free at Harristeeter.
KD says
Yes, it is.
