This might seem odd but sales are not always REALLY a sale. Our Rite Aid Specialist, Melissa, sent over this picture she found in her Rite Aid:
My first though was – Really Rite Aid? Really? Regular Price is 99¢ and suddenly it’s “ON SALE” for 2/$2.50? Isn’t that actually an INCREASE of 26 cents? Then I looked really close- the item at 99¢ is the 1 liter. The tag is for the 16.9 or 18.5 oz bottles. So the tag is on the wrong item.
Well, there are a few things we should note here:
- You are paying more for less. the 99¢ 1 liter is 33.8 oz or .03 an ounce. The 18.5 oz at $1.25 is .07 an ounce! You’re paying twice as much per ounce by buying the smaller amount.
- Sales tags are manually put up and taken down every week. Often thousands of them per store! Errors are going to happen. Double check before putting an item in your cart.
- Sales tags are designed to draw your eye in- but we need to look further. Is it REALLY a sale or did they just move a few pennies? An item at regular price of $2.55 with a sales tag of 2/$5 really isn’t a sale….it’s only 5¢ off. That is where a stock up price is important. It allows you to look past the fancy math the store tries to trick up with by knowing what is REALLY a good price!
Have you ever seen a sale tag that really wasn’t a sale?
