Reminder: if this deal is something you want to do you HAVE to start tomorrow Tuesday 2/19. If you don’t get the next 6 weeks worth of tickets you will not get the $20 coupon to use on groceries. This deal is not for everyone. Personally I plan to get much of my birthday and Christmas gifts done using this promo! Plus it lets me spread out my spending on gifts!
So I am really excited about this promotion at Food Lion because I can turn gift cards into free groceries.
For the next 6 weeks Food Lion is running a promo: Each week when you spend $40 in one transaction you will get a Shop.Collect.Earn ticket. Collect 6 of 7 tickets (this started last week so you will have to do this every week for the next 6 weeks) and get a $20 coupon to use on groceries.
This is what I have done the last 2 weeks:
Buy $40 (or more) in gift cards. (Food Lion gift cards will not count towards the $40).
I felt safer having one non-gift card item in my cart when I ran this deal. Gift cards are non-refundable and non-returnable so I wanted to be 100% sure that my catalina printed for my week.
Collect that week’s ticket.
Food Lion carries gift cards for Olive Garden, Cracker Barrel, itunes and many other retailers. I am “pre-buying” at stores I routinely shop anyway. Last week I got $50 in Lowe’s Home Improvement cards. We are always doing DIY projects and gift cards never expire. This week we are going to Cracker Barrel for Valentine’s Day (so romantic I know but the kids & I love that place!) so I pre-bought our dinner and now I collected week 2’s ticket.
Thinking ahead I can get gift cards for upcoming birthdays and even Christmas and get $20 in free groceries! At the end of 6 weeks I will have “pre-purchased” $300 in goods that I will be buying anyway at different retailers and get $20 in free groceries. The best part is that I can still use discounts & coupons with the gift cards I purchase so I can stretch those gift cards even farther. This may not work for every family and situation but if you know you are going to be making a large purchase at Lowe’s Home Improvement or another store this is a great way to get a “bonus”!
A few tips to making this work out well:
- Keep the activation receipts attached to the cards. This avoids issues if something is wrong with the cards (I tape mine to the back)
- Keep up with your Shop.Collect. Earn tickets- they cannot be replaced.
- Pick stores you are going to shop anyway. If you hate a certain restaurant or store buying a gift card there just to get free groceries is a waste of money.
Lowe’s Foods is also running a promo this week on gift cards: Buy $50 in select gift cards get a $5 off your next purchase coupon!

Are you getting $20 each week or just at the end of the 6 weeks?
MoolaSavingMom says
You get $20 at the end of 6 weeks- this idea ONLY works if there are things you are going to buy anyway Buying a bunch of useless gift cards is wasteful unless you will use them. I see it as “pre=paying” 🙂

$20 at the end of 6 weeks

Does the gift card count towards the $40 if you purchase atleast one grocery item?
MoolaSavingMom says
You may not HAVE to buy a grocery item but I felt safer doing so because gift cards are non-refundable/returnable.
Jessica says
OK awesome thank you..

Why do we need to purchase one grocery item? I haven’t seen their flyer to read the complete details of the promotion.
Thanks

You may not *have* to but I personally felt safer because gift cards are non-refundable so if you don’t get your catalina you are stuck with them.

Can this be done in conjuction with the promo that ends today (2/14) where you buy $50 in gift cards from Lowe’s, Belk, or itunes and get $10 off instantly of the grocery purchase? Thanks
MoolaSavingMom says
Does that promo end today? I thought it ended last week! YES! I did that promo last week!
Lynn says
Yes it ends today. I went tonight and did it.

MoolaSavingMom says
I believe as long as they are not Food Lion cards it should work- but beware that the Visa Cards charge a fee of up to $5 a card to activatge
