My family went to a nice BBQ restaurant here in Raleigh for my sister’s birthday. Instead of bread or biscuits they brought hush puppies to the table before the food arrived. They didn’t last long at the table.
All day long I’ve craved hush puppies. So I decided to see what I had lying around to make some. Thankfully I have my favorite deep fryer at the ready always!
Ingredients:
1 pkg Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix
1 egg
1/3 cup milk
1/4 cup flour
1/4 onion, finely chopped
1/2 tsp salt
Oil for frying
Directions:
Combine mix, egg, milk, flour, onion and salt.
Mix well
Drop by rounded teaspoon into hot oil.
Fry 4 minutes (turning half way) until golden brown.
Drain well and serve.
Just made these, so easy and they came out great! I added some Jalapeno to the mix, perfect!
Awesome! I think I may try some cheese next time!!
How much will this recipe make?
I used a cookie scoop…made over 20
I’m trying these today, just mixed up the batter added old Bay and jalapeno, I’m excited.
please let me know how they turned out!
Hi just seeing this for the first time and was wondering if anyone has added corn. It would only let me reply, not make a new comment for some reason.
I added sweet corn and jalapeño peppers in mine and it turned out great.
Very very good. I added very little crush pepper and very little red a nd green bell pepper. So so good
OH I love the crushed pepper idea! Might have to try that!
I dont know what i may have done wrong…but they came out too dry and crumbled
Wonderful….
You didn’t add enough milk
A little trick my husband’s aunt shared with me was to add a small amount of poultry seasoning.
Best hush puppies I’ve ever made.
So glad to hear that! We love them !
Did you use all purpose or self rising flour?
I used all purpose.
Are you to use all purpose or self rising flour in this recipe?
I used all purpose.
Is it OK to use self rising flour?
since it’s fried not baked it *should* be ok.
Awesome, recipe. Thx
I had a taste for hush puppies so I tried your recipe today. Easy effortless came out absolutely delicious. Endless possibilities or things you can add to the recipe. This one is a keeper I didn’t change anything made according to instructions. THANKS
Yay!
Oh I have family in Raleigh and been a few times there. I might have been to the place you were referring to but not sure. I have to try this recipe now. Thanks:)
What temp were you cooking at? I tried several common frying temps and either had blackened hush puppies or they still came out gooey and raw in the middle.
Oh no! The oil was around 365F.
So could these be done in an air fryer and if so…how?
I haven’t tried…you may try it with parchment paper down and trying out the time.
These were awesome! So light and tasty!
I went overboard, I added
Garlic and onion and corn
They were so good !
Yes, I cooked these last night and chopped up a roasted pork shoulder with Scotts BBQ sauce. Yeah I’m a Raleigh girl…and it was on! I made coleslaw too. Yummy! My family want a repeat meal 😋
About how many does this make?
This is great my favorite recipe Hans down fix and add different flavors to change it out love the simplicity of it thanks
Whenever I fry fish, everyone asks for these hush puppies!!!! So tasty and easy!!!!
Dairy and egg allergies. What could you replace the milk and egg with?
ohhhh I am sorry I don’t know what options there might be.
In other recipes what would you use instead?
Gonna try these today with Boston butt, baked beans, homemade slaw… I’m 2 hours from Raleigh in Pembroke nc…thanks for sharing.
You could try using a nut milk or oat milk and make a flax egg. 1Tbl ground flax seed and 2Tbl water. Let sit to thicken for 5 to 10 minutes.
Ivam going to try these today gor my grandsons birthday he loves hushpippies .
